The number of children covered under these projects is
approximately 486, for the slum-based projects, and 4,500 for the municipal schools. |

The teaching of these children is done by
"Doorstep", which means bringing education to the doorstep of the underprivedged
children. We have just recently been able to begin helping with their efforts and many
projects for the children. Bellow are some of the main programs.
1. Kindergarten
- A recreational kindergarten for those 3 to 5 years of age, for underprivileged
children who would otherwise have no access to any kind of teaching.
2. Drop Out Children
- Giving non-formal education to out-of-school and drop out children ages 6-18 years
in order to integrate them back into the Municipal schools.
-
3. Study Classes
- Supportive educational study classes for the primary school children enrolled in
Municipal schools in 1rst and 2nd grade. These children come from illiterate families
cannot help them with their studies or homework. The volunteer teachers help them every
day after school to keep up with the lessons.
4. Book Reading
- Book reading opportunities are conducted in urban communities as well as in
Municipal schools. Storybooks are borrowed from the library and distributed by various
volunteer children in the community, who are paid for their efforts. This teaches the
children responsibility as well as giving the opportunity to those who would not normally
be able to get books.
5. Computer Courses
- Providing training and computer classes to the local teachers, who will be
able to use the training for keeping the school records and the children's progress
reports.
6. Child to Child
- Child to Child program is conducted with slum children. The children in 1rst grade
are taught by older children who get paid, plus receive educational training for teaching.
This is very helpful as it relies on local resources and is a benefit for the older
children to learn teaching skills.

7. Food and Clothing
- Providing food and clothing is a new effort of ours. Up until now the children have
been coming to school and taught by the "Doorstep" teachers for 6 months,
without any extras given to them except the teaching. Now that we have gotten involved in
their projects we would like to help them set up a better class environment. We are
working with the little funding we have but we would like to do more. We have already
gotten 1 class which is around 20 children, new uniform sets for both the boys and girls.
We also have started giving 1 meal a day to one of the poorer classes so that the children
will be able to concentrate more on their schooling instead of their empty stomach.
-
7. Other Activities
- Other activities include arts and crafts, celebration of festivals, arranging
picnics, educational visits to museums and other sites, participating in fun fairs,
helping children obtain age certificates, arranging school admissions for children and
annual gatherings.
